Alexandre Sarr could become the first number one draft pick in the history of the NBL Next Stars program, and Perth Wildcats General Manager of Basketball Operations Danny Mills says discussions are already well underway surrounding a potential Next Star for NBL25.

Sarr has been predicted as a near-consensus top three selection ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft, which is set for late June, and was a finalist for the NBL’s Next Generation Award in his sole season for the club.

He will almost certainly follow in the footsteps of LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey and Ousmane Dieng in being selected in the draft lottery, and Mills says it could be tough to replicate the star Frenchman’s impact next season.

“We are in productive conversations involving a Next Star for next season,” Mills told Wildcats Media.

“Obviously, it’s going to be hard to replicate what Alex has provided us on both ends of the court, but the goal is to find a prospect that can be productive and contribute to winning basketball.”

French prospect Nolan Traore trained with the Wildcats alongside Sarr during the NBL24 pre-season, and the 17-year-old is currently predicted to be selected at pick 14 in the 2025 NBA Draft.
