If recent mock drafts are to believed, the NBL Next Stars program is poised to have its first ever number one draft selection in the form of former Perth Wildcat Alexandre Sarr.

The Atlanta Hawks emerged from the draft lottery with the opening pick, and Sarr is primed to join the likes of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray in the franchise’s continued search for its first championship since 1958.

Sarr being taken first overall may be the crowning achievement of the Next Stars program, but GM of Next Stars Recruitment Liam Santamaria says previous high selections have already helped put the program on the map.

“It’s pretty remarkable to see the success the program has had and the players it has produced in a short period of time,” Santamaria told Code Sports.

“The Next Stars program has produced three NBA draft lottery picks already, a top three pick in (LaMelo) Ball and a top 10 pick in (Josh) Giddey.

“The fact that a number of current Next Stars are a chance of being drafted, including Sarr trying to make history as the program’s first ever No.1 pick, it speaks to the league and the Next Stars being a proven pathway.”
